I admit the title is a bit misleading. I love playing tennis and have been playing pretty much all my life. My Dad was an avid tennis player and he was determined to make my brother and I love the sport as well. My first tennis racket was a sawed off badmitten racket and my first lesson was our the living room. (not a good idea) My second lesson was on the public tennis courts in Richmond, California, where you could get group instructions for the entire summer for the $2 membership fee. So despite my humble beginnings, I turned out to be a pretty good tennis player, playing number one singles in high school.
Since then, my tennis has been somewhat sporadic and with my move to New York City 18 years ago, where tennis court reservations are about $100 an hour, not a very frequent event. About three years ago, however, I decided that I wanted to play tennis again, not just because it was great exercise and I really missed playing, but because the tennis outfits are just so darn cute. I now play about 1-2 times a week in the fall and winter months leading up to the spring and summer. When August rolls around we pack up the family and head to the Hamptons. There I play at least three times a week with a great group of summer gals and with anyone who has a tennis court in their backyard.
Back to the cute tennis outfits. I'm a faithful Nike Girl. I love everything they make for tennis and it really has a nice fit. The skirts, tops and dresses are not only fashionable but strategically designed with built in support and enough coverage without restricting your mobility. In fact, even if i didn't play tennis I would buy the outfits. That being said, I still have way more outfits than I can justify for the time I actually play tennis. The best part for me is after tennis, I can run into the grocery store or into town and I'm projecting an image of "oh, she works out, and plays tennis" and "how cute is that tennis outfit?" Can you say that about any other sport or exercise activity? Yoga, maybe...but it doesn't hide my figure flaws. Spinning? Uh, no. And as cute as Lulu Lemon's workout gear is, it just can't compare.
So, yes, I love playing tennis, burning calories, fresh air and sunshine, blah, blah, blah, but I'm also coveting the Nike Tennis Smash Dress and yes, I'm playing it for all the wrong reasons.
